When the B 990 arrived, its expanded embroidery capability was one of the headline features. The Giant Magnetic Hoop is the accessory that takes full advantage of it — a 12 x 16.1 inch (305 x 410 mm) embroidery field, available exclusively for the 990.

Why the size matters

At 12 x 16.1 inches, this is the largest hooping area BERNINA offers. Quilt blocks, large panels, table toppers, and oversized single-hooping designs that used to require splitting and re-aligning can now stitch out in one go. Fewer hoopings means fewer alignment points, which means cleaner results and less time at the machine babysitting transitions.

Magnetic hooping, giant scale

Like the rest of the Magnetic Hoop family, there are no screws or clamps. You lay your stabilized fabric on the base and the magnetic frame holds it with even tension across the entire field — which matters even more at this size, where uneven tension would otherwise show up as puckering or drift across a large design.

  • Even tension prevents fabric distortion and misalignment across the full 12 x 16.1 inch field
  • Rehooping is quick: adjust or reposition fabric without removing the hoop from the machine
  • Works for both delicate and thick fabrics, holding challenging materials securely without excessive pressure

Who it's for

This hoop is made exclusively for the B 990 — it is not compatible with other models. If you own a 990 and embroider quilts or large-scale designs, this is arguably the single most impactful accessory you can add. For other machines, the Large, Medium Border, and Medium Magnetic Hoops cover the rest of the lineup, and the new Sticky Hoops arrive this fall for delicate-fabric and in-the-hoop work.
