Tips for Sewing with the BERNINA Appliqué Foot 23
1. Start with the right needle plate. Before you begin, insert the zigzag needle plate on your machine. This gives the needle the clearance it needs for wider decorative stitches.
2. Test your stitch on a scrap first. While there are several stitches you can use for machine appliqué, the most common is a narrow, tight zigzag. Always test on a scrap of your project fabric before stitching on your appliqué. You're looking for a stitch just wide enough to cover the edge of the shape, with a stitch length small enough to form a smooth satin stitch — but not so short that it builds up too much bulk.
3. Secure your shapes before you sew. Keep your appliqué pieces from shifting by anchoring them first. Fabric glue, a light coating of temporary spray adhesive, or iron-on fusible webbing all work well — use whichever suits your project and personal preference.
4. Stabilize single layers. If you're appliquéing on just one layer of fabric, add a stabilizer such as a tear-away underneath. This helps prevent tunneling and puckering as the dense stitches form.
