BERNINA is launching Sticky Embroidery Hoops this September, and they fill a real gap in the hoop lineup. Here's what they are, who they're for, and how to decide between a Sticky Hoop and a Magnetic Hoop.
What is a Sticky Hoop?
A Sticky Hoop uses a pre-cut adhesive stabilizer instead of clamping pressure to hold your fabric. You simply press your fabric onto the sticky surface — no hooping at all. It uses the same coupling system as the Magnetic Hoop, so your machine recognizes it right away with no firmware update needed.
Two sizes
- Large Sticky Embroidery Hoop: 8.25 x 15.75 inch (210 x 400 mm) maximum stitch area
- Medium Sticky Embroidery Hoop: 6.5 x 10.4 inch (165 x 265 mm) maximum stitch area
What's in the box
Each hoop includes the lower hoop, 10 pre-cut adhesive stabilizers, an embroidery template, and documentation. Refill packs of pre-cut stabilizers will be sold separately.
When to reach for the Sticky Hoop
- Appliqué and in-the-hoop projects: because nothing clamps the edges, fabric can extend beyond the sewing field, making trimming much easier
- Light, thin fabrics like silk and chiffon: the adhesive holds them flat without stretching or warping
- Anything prone to hoop burn or slipping
When the Magnetic Hoop is still the better choice
- Terry cloth, bulky fleece, quilt sandwiches, and other heavy fabrics
- Large designs with a lot of fabric to manage
- Leather and vinyl, where even magnetic tension works beautifully
Think of them as partners, not replacements: Magnetic for weight and bulk, Sticky for delicacy and in-the-hoop work.
Which machines are compatible?
The Medium fits the widest range: the current 9 Series (990), 880 PLUS, every 7 Series model (700 through 790 ULTRA), and the full 5 Series (500 through 590, including the 580 Liberty). The Large fits the 990, 880 PLUS, and all 7 Series machines.
